Head Coach Owen Hems

Owen Hems began his boxing career ten years ago, totalling 27 amateur fights, joining Fortus Team Gym in 2011 as a fighter. In 2015, Owen retired and began coaching with Fortus.

Alongside Coach Bruno, Owen coached beginners at the club, teaching them the fundamental techniques of boxing, starting with small groups and graduating to taking the 5:15pm Development Class.

In 2018, Owen and the team began to coach and corner the fighters. In the same year, Fortus achieved the following accolades: 2018 City Gym of the Year, 2018 Overall Club of the Year, Adrian Cammanaro Best Male Elite Boxer, and Amando Shehu Best u/15s Boxer.

Fortus also produced a Commonwealth Games Representative, three Australian Champions and nine SA State Champions.

In 2019 Fortus went from strength to strength, with Adrian winning the Australian title, competing at the Kings Cup in Thailand, the World Championships in Russia, and the Olympic Test Event in Tokyo. Armando won his Australian title in the u19 Nationals.

Both Fortus fighters were awarded South Australian Boxer of the Year in the Elite and Junior Divisions, respectively, cementing them as champions. In what was a challenging year for the gym, the team importantly kept the gym together, got results for all fighters, despite the obstacles put in their way.
